GAO Report

In March 2008, the United States Government Accountability Office (GAO) published an audit of the Native Hawaiian Education Act Program to identify its strengths and weaknesses, bring attention to structural issues and ensure maximum benefit for every federal dollar spent to educate Hawaiians. GAO was asked to analyze: 1) what is known about NHEA’s impact on Native Hawaiian education, 2) the Department of Education’s efforts to oversee NHEA grants, and 3) the extent to which Education and the Native Hawaiian Councils have fulfilled their roles and responsibilities.
