Education Council members are to be appointed by the US Secretary of Education. However, the public is welcome at all Education Council quarterly meetings. How do I join an Island Council? Island Councils are open to the public, anybody can join! Please email us at nhec(at)nhec.org and we will send you information on the next scheduled meeting and how to contact your Island Chairperson for further information. How can I impact the quality of education in my community? One of the most powerful tools you can use to advocate on behalf of education is your voice! Elected officials must pay attention when their constituents take a stand on an issue. YOU can make a difference in the quality of education in your community by becoming an active participant in policymaking. Remember to register to vote: http://hawaii.gov/elections/voters/registration.htm There are several ways to communicate with your representatives. You can call, email, fax or mail in a letter. All correspondence should include your name, address and district information and be concise, factual and include the bill number you are citing or specific issue you are concerned about. Make sure to state your purpose in the opening of the letter, explain why you support or oppose the bill or issue and then state specific facts about how the bill will impact educators, students and community members in the legislator’s district. You may submit testimony to the Hawaii State Legislature online at: http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/emailtestimony Please email nhec(at)nhec.org if you would like to be added to our email list and receive updates on legislation related to Native Hawaiian education.
